If you are looking to refurbish your home,
while you may think of a lot of ways to take down a certain wall, add a wall
over there and all of that. While those are good changes to have in your home,
one of the best things to be added in that list in timber floors refurbishing. By having this process done, you can be assured to get a
significant increase in the value of your property as well as a plethora of
compliments from people who will visit your place.
The process while effective may take some time
so you need to be patient. The total time required from start to finish of this
process will be one week or maybe a day or two over that but not more. If there
is someone who says that they can get all of it done within 24 hours, you need
to beware of that person or company. The one week time includes preparing and
curing time. The first thing to do is to remove all furniture and from the
room. The room needs to be empty and the windows and doors need to be open. If
there is any piece of furniture or anything immovable that cannot be moved into
another room, you need to cover it up properly so wood debris may not settle
into it.
The next thing that professionals do is to rub
the floor with sandpaper. The floor is sanded two to three times, the first
time with the harshest sandpaper and descending from there onwards. The last
sanding is done by the relatively smoother sandpaper for a smooth finishing. In-between
each sanding, you need to properly and thoroughly vacuum the floor and any
piece of furniture that might still be in the room.
After the initial sanding and vacuuming, the
first layer of finish is applied and the floor is left to dry overnight. The
next day floor is again sanded with a buffing machine before more layers of
finishing are applied. If you want to change the colour of your timber floor
i.e. make it darker, then you will have to get it stained. Staining is the
process of applying a darker colour to the floor before any finishing is
applied. A freshly sanded floor is able to absorb the ‘stain’ faster as
compared to when it is applied on a finished floor.
Considering you have sanded your floor and
gone through the sanding buffing part, your floor will now be applied with a
final layer of finishing chemical which will bring out the final look of your
floor. It is advisable to let the floor dry for a whole day for optimum
aesthetics and even after it has dried, you are advised to walk on it with
socks on and avoid walking with shoes or barefoot. Likewise, when you move your furniture in, to prevent it
from leaving any scuffing marks on your freshly sanded and polished floor, you
should get their bottoms felt padded.
Timber floors refurbishing is a great way to go about a renovation as it
can add great value to your property and aesthetics too. While you may have
professionals come and perform the service for you, if you have enough time and
are patient, you can do it by yourself too by renting some equipment. Just do
your research and work with a calm mind and patience.
